Job Description

The Shift Lead serves as the manager-on-duty during assigned shifts while also working in frontline roles such as cashier and host when needed. This position ensures smooth operations, fast and friendly service, accurate cash handling, and strong team performance in a high-volume fast casual diner environment.

Responsibilities

  • Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Shift Leadership (Manager-on-Duty)
  • • Lead and oversee all operations during the shift
  • • Assign and adjust positions (cashier, host, expo, kitchen, runner) based on business volume
  • • Monitor service speed, food quality, and team performance
  • • Make real-time decisions to keep operations running efficiently
  • • Act as the main point of contact for staff and guests
  • 2. Host/ cashier Duties
  • • Greet every guest promptly with a friendly and welcoming attitude
  • • Manage waitlists, seating flow, and table rotation
  • • Maintain organized and clean front entrance and dining area
  • • Communicate wait times clearly and manage guest expectations
  • • Support team by bussing or resetting tables when needed
  • 3. Cashier/ host Duties
  • • Operate POS system accurately and efficiently
  • • Take dine-in and to-go orders with attention to detail
  • • Handle cash, credit card, and digital payments responsibly
  • • Balance cash drawer and resolve discrepancies
  • • Upsell menu items and promote specials when appropriate
  • 4. Customer Experience
  • • Ensure every guest receives quick, friendly, and accurate service
  • • Handle complaints or issues professionally and resolve them quickly
  • • Step in during rushes to assist any position as needed
  • 5. Food Quality & Speed
  • • Ensure all orders meet diner standards for quality and accuracy
  • • Monitor ticket times and communicate with kitchen to avoid delays
  • • Double-check orders before they are served or handed out
  • 6. Opening & Closing
  • • Complete opening setup (registers, prep, stocking, cleanliness)
  • • Oversee closing duties (cleaning, cash counts, restocking)
  • • Ensure all side work is completed properly before shift ends
  • 7. Cleanliness & Safety
  • • Maintain cleanliness in dining, kitchen, and service areas
  • • Enforce food safety and sanitation standards
  • • Address spills, hazards, or maintenance issues immediately
  • 8. Team Development & Accountability
  • • Train and coach team members on service standards
  • • Hold staff accountable for attendance, performance, and conduct
  • • Communicate shift updates, issues, and feedback to upper management
  • Qualifications
  • • 1–2+ years of restaurant experience (fast casual preferred)
  • • Previous leadership, keyholder, or shift lead experience strongly preferred
  • • Experience with POS systems and cash handling
  • • Strong communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
  • • Ability to stay calm and lead during busy rush periods
  • Physical Requirements
  • • Stand/walk for 6–10 hours per shift
  • • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • • Work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
