Responsibilities

  • Greet guests to make them feel comfortable and welcome
  • Take guests’ food orders and handle cash/credit transactions
  • Follow operational policies and procedures, including those for cash handling and safety/security to ensure the safety of all team members during each shift
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the brand and menu items
  • Serve food to guests in a courteous and timely manner
  • Quickly and accurately prepare food items

About Bert's BBQ

In 1970, native Austinites, Bert, and Joyce Johnson opened a small 1,000 square-foot barbeque joint at MLK and the Rio Grande near the University of Texas campus. Bert was a state employee and cooking for co-workers and friends--out of his house, but don't tell anyone-- every chance he had.

Bert's father-in-law, Henry Adams, owned a Gulf service station on MLK and knew a dormant upholstery shop for rent and looking for a tenant. He suggested Bert and Joyce use the space to set up shop. He and Joyce were able to do this on an if-it-works basis and could purchase the shop when they were ready.

Well, it did work. Bert and Joyce purchased the little spot and, alongside the Johnson family, grew the business through the ’70s and ’80s. Looking back, Bert always said, “thank God for state employees, Old Austin High and UT or we would not have made it.”

These cohorts remain our core customers to this day. Sadly, Bert passed away in 1989, but the Johnson family still operates the establishment, continuing to plate customer favorites such as the “T-Man” and Frito pie, as well as, traditional BBQ fare: brisket, sausage, chicken, and ribs.

With such crowd-pleasing fare, Bert's Bar-B-Que rolled through the '90s and was heading strong into the new century when an incident set the restaurant back in 2007.
